Alan Barker

Alan is currently a Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Exercise at the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC), University of Exeter. His primary areas of research are:

* Limiting factors of oxidative metabolism (e.g. oxygen uptake kinetics, maximal oxygen uptake)
* Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise training in paediatric groups
* The effect of exercise on cardiometabolic risk factors and vascular function in children and adolescents
* The benefits and risks of exercise training in children and adolescents
* Exercise, nutrition and bone health in children and adolescents

He has published in excess of 70 manuscripts on these topics, which includes  an expert statement on the measurement and interpretation of aerobic fitness for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and book chapters on the assessment of fitness and performance in children including for the recent Oxford Textbook of Children’s Exercise Science and Medicine.
